Maximize your investment by measuring e-learning ROI
Costs, quality, and practical application together determine whether your e-learning pays for itself.

When you invest as a company or organization, you naturally want to be sure that you will earn back this investment (multiple times over). Sometimes this is easy to measure (for example: you put a certain budget into advertisements and then know exactly how many purchases are made through these ads, and thus what the Return On Investment (ROI) on the ads is), but sometimes it is not. Sometimes results can only be measured subjectively.
In general, you can calculate ROI using the following formula: (revenue / cost) x 100%.
At Pluvo, we are regularly asked: how do I measure the ROI of my e-learning? How do I know that the e-learning I have invested in as a company or organization is actually contributing to our profit (in multiple areas within the company or organization)?
The same applies to e-learning: there are several factors involved in measuring e-learning ROI. We previously wrote a blog about ROI; in this blog, we will delve deeper into measuring your e-learning ROI.
Factors that influence e-learning ROI
When measuring e-learning ROI, there are several factors to consider, such as:
- The initial investment in the e-learning content and the learning platform itself. What were the total costs for designing and implementing the e-learning?
- On top of the costs, there is, of course, the monetary value of the time employees spend completing the e-learning (after all, time is money in a company or organization).
- The quality of the e-learning content. Poorly designed or irrelevant e-learning will likely not lead to significant improvements in employee skills or performance, which can negatively impact ROI. Therefore, it is essential to invest in high-quality, engaging, and relevant e-learning content that aligns with the needs of the employees and the organization as a whole.
- The engagement of employees with the e-learning. If employees are not motivated or interested in taking the e-learning, its effectiveness will decrease. Therefore, it is important to foster a culture of learning within the organization and encourage employees to actively participate in e-learning initiatives.
- The extent to which learned skills are applied in practice. It is therefore of great importance to establish clear learning objectives, skills, or competencies in advance that can actually be measured.
How do you measure e-learning ROI?
To effectively measure e-learning ROI, you must first define clear objectives and KPIs for the e-learning initiatives, such as improving specific skills, increasing productivity, or implementing certain processes that benefit the efficiency of the company or organization.
Next, measurable indicators must be established to track progress toward these goals, such as the number of successfully completed e-learning modules, assessment scores, the level of skill development, and employee performance after completing the e-learning (for example, compared to previous performance reviews).
It is also important to accurately track the costs and benefits of e-learning, including the costs of developing and implementing the e-learning content and the learning platform, as well as the savings realized through improved productivity, enhanced performance, and higher employee retention.
By regularly analyzing and evaluating this data, companies gain better insight into the impact of their e-learning initiatives and can make adjustments to maximize ROI.
Measuring e-learning ROI can be a complex process, but with the right approach and tools, companies can certainly assess and optimize the effectiveness of their e-learning initiatives. By considering factors such as the quality of the e-learning content, employee engagement, and the establishment of measurable objectives and KPIs, companies can ensure that their investment in e-learning makes a significant contribution to the overall performance and success of the company or organization.
